On All Souls’ Day it is customary to visit cemeteries and pray for the dead. A plenary (full) or partial indulgence for the souls in purgatory, is granted to the faithful who, devoutly visit a cemetery (November 1st – 8th) and pray for the dead. An indulgence is the remission before God of the temporal punishment due for sins already forgiven. To gain an indulgence, you must be in the state of grace and fulfill the following conditions: (1) visit a cemetery and pray for the dead and do so with a complete detachment from sin, (2) go to confession, (3) receive the Holy Eucharist, and (4) recite prayers for the intentions of the Holy Father. When all conditions are fulfilled, the indulgence is full; when some are fulfilled or all are fulfilled imperfectly, the indulgence is partial.
